Google Talk and iChat Snow Leapord ...

I am trying to find out if any other people can not longer video chat with a Jabber account using gmail account to anyone else that uses Google Talk. This set up worked fine before the upgrade to Snow Leapord and iChat 5.0

I have contacted Apple support and they will not offer support for setting up Google Talk.

I also have a Mobile Me account and still can not seem to video chat using a specific Apple test account.

So I looking for any help with that does use iChat and Google Talk

iChat giving error with Leopard - ...

Hi,

I just upgraded to the latest version of Leopard. However I am unable to launch iChat.

When I click on the iChat icon it just does nothing and after a while it comes back with the message:

"You have been disconnected from iChat services.
An internal error occurred that disconnected you from all iChat services. To resume using iChat, log in again to your instant messaging account."

Well even when I reboot and restart I get the same message. I tried to reinstall iChat still not working, I even deleted the .plist file from the Library

iChat Transcripts not saving ...

I've noticed recently that in Snow Leopard, my iChat transcripts aren't fully saving. I have the settings correct: "Save chat transcripts to:" is selected. The caveat is that I also have "In new chat windows, show:" selected, and set to "the last chat". Seems to be a bug. Can anyone else verify, or offer a solution?

When I open iChat, my previous chat, which appears in the new chat window, consists of only some parts of the conversation, but never the whole thing.

I want to use my MSN account with iChat, because all my friends do so. But this doesn't work. Why does it not work?

When is Apple going to build MSN support into iChat?

Also, what about Facebook? Everyone in Norway uses Facebook and MSN, but nobody uses Aim or that other stuff.

Almost nobody uses a Mac either, compared to how many uses a PC. But those few using a Mac, don't care to register Mac accounts.

Infact, I dont even have an MSN adress myself, but I've enabled my own domain email with MSN. Why cant you do that atleast with iChat?

iChat snow leopard video NOT working ...

Video chat doesnt seem to ever want to work!!!! It's very frustrating! I can't even change my port to 443, that fixed the problem when I was on Leopard. Whenever I try to change it to 443 it changes bak to 5190 automatically. I log off and change it, and i noticed when I change it to 443 and click outside of that box, it'll automatically change to 5190. Can anyone help me?

ok so i was on iChat today video chatting with my friend. i went away for a second. (loged off) and when i went back on, i did not have a video icon. all i had, and all anyone online had, was a audio chat icon. no video. what could have caused this? how can i fix this?

When I initiate the call, I can't hear the other person, but he can hear me. So we tried it with my buddy initiating the call and works just opposite for him. He can't hear me but I can hear him. Is there any fix for this? It used to work before installing Snow Leopard. Thanks.

Sometimes during a 2-way video chat I will go into screen sharing mode. When I am finished with screen sharing, I want to return to video chatting but have found no way of doing this. Do I have to end the session and start a new video chat or am I just missing something?

iChat Users Not Appearing As Away ...

As of June 24, 2009, my friends and I have been noticing a rather large glitch in iChat involving AIM accounts (and possibly more, I have no friends on MobileMe / .Mac so this might be more widespread)

Symptoms:
-iChat users who have set their status to an away message still appear to be available on anyone using AIM (the client does not matter)
-iChat will still auto-reply the away message to anyone that IMs the person, but it is still a cause for confusion.

Theories as to the cause:
-AIM changing their protocol slightly when accomodating the iPhone app with Push / 24hr session keepalive times. Even the launch of a competing app, BeejiveIM has been affected by the large amount of users suddenly using their stuff
-Random time-sensitive iChat glitch

It's nice that this isn't a huge glitch, but it's still there and I'm hoping someone provides a fix soon.

My iChat has started messing up. It doesn't show any of the categories or the buddies. It shows them as all offline, but there isn't an "offline" tab. Other people can see me online, however. I would really like some help.

Music playing ...

I had music playing on my MacBook today... I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I turned off Safari, Firefox, and iTunes, but it kept playing. Then I turned off iChat, and the music turned off. Has anybody else experienced anything like that?

group chat and file transfer does not ...

Hello,

Both me and my friend are using Google Talk over iChat, he is running 10.5.8 and I have 10.6.1.
He just tried to send me a jpg through file transfer and it did not work.
And earlier I tried to group chat with two friends (also using google talk over ichat) but that did not work, I was just using the text chat feature and not the voice or video.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Not able to start the ichat server with server admin. It has completely fozen and can not do anything. WHile seeing the log it displays

Hi, like many others, i'm experiencing problems with audio/video calls and screen sharing on iChat 4.
It's really important since my dad lives abroad and is 80 years old, so i need to help him out by taking over control of his MacBookPro when he needs me to.

Here's our setup when it DID work:
We were both in my house, on my network, through my Airport Exreme. We're both running 2009 MacBook Pro's with OSX 10.5.8 on it, and were signed in to iChat through our google account (jabber).

Then he returned back to his home (i'm in Holland, he's in Austria), and since then we can only do text chats on iChat. Whenever we invite eachother for video chat or screen sharing, we get the same error message about a communication error, or telling us the other one 'didn't reply' or something like that. I'll copy-paste the exact message error details the next time we try.
We tried to solve it by changing services, meaning i signed in through my @mac.com account and he signing in through his AIM account, but with no luck. Also AIM to AIM didn't help.

I'm still on my Airport Extreme, connected to a DSL modem which is branded by my provider, so no idea what it is.
He is on a Speedtouch ST585 wireless DSL router, which he also got from his provider.

Any settings we should check/change? i've read all sorts of stuff about port forwarding, SIP/NAT compatibility and UPNP but that all works rather confusing than clarifying..

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Chat logs not being saved? ...

I went into my chat logs today and found that for the last two weeks, iChat has not been saving any of my chats. I am now missing several import chat logs that I was depending on, and they are not there. I obviously checked to make sure the setting was still set to save them to the correct folder, and nothing has changed, however it seems to randomly not save the logs I am looking for.

Any ideas?

iChat Google Talk connection problem ...

Hi all!

I've set up my google talk account on iChat using the suggested settings. I can use it in some networks, and I am getting an error in other networks. I am pretty sure that, those other networks have some limitations, resulting in this error. But I've no rights whatsoever to change the configuration of this network.

Anyway, my questions is, if I can connect to this service using Windows and Windows client of Google Talk (which I can), why cannot I connect using iChat? Is there a configuration for iChat, which I am forgetting to do?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't find the answer. Please forgive me.
I want to join in chatting on a site which has video capability. I'm new to this type of chatting. Although I can see others in the room, I can't get my iSight camera to work there.
What are the steps I need to follow to get the others to see me?
Keep in mind that, although I'm not a total newbie, I have never done video chat in my life. I'm using an iMac 24. Do I need to actually add an external camera, or can the built-in iSight be used? I use Firefox to access the site, and I do have Flash installed. I understand that Flash is what the site requires.
Anyone feel up to walking me through the process?

ichat no audio on video chat with snow ...

Hello,
I am having an issue where there is only one way audio when doing a video chat with those using snow leopard. If I start the video chat, the other person can hear me and I cant hear them. If they start the chat I can then hear them but they can not hear me. This was not a problem prior to upgrading to snow leopard (both of us). I can video chat fine with those who have not upgraded to snow leopard.
Audio chats alone work fine with these people.
I have tried changing bandwidth settings in ichat on both ends, enable 32 bit mode, checked the sound preferences, etc and nothing helps. We are not running any third party apps that have been mentioned to interfere with ichat.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions..

In my office, we all use Macs and use iChat's Bonjour to message each other. Is there a way a Windows user on our network could join in our Bonjour chats?

iChat will not work in the USA ...

I have travelled extensively all over this planet and have used iChat as the makers intended to enjoy the company of my loved ones.

Why, oh why, does it fail to connect me to my family from any wireless, wired or cellular network that I have been connected to in hotels, cafe's, venues, residential and business's?
My wie can connect easily to any of her friends at home or in other countries.
I have tried all the Apple Test User's and it works perfectly.

Why should I invest in technology that doesn't work? Give my family a taste of whats possible. And then have it removed from our lives.
This has been so frustrating. My kids don't understand why they can see their Dad when he is in any other country in the world. But they can't when he is in the USA. How can it be?
There has to be an answer.

Skype works perfectly every time. But the video quality is appalling. I paid for iChat. I want iChat.

And please do not talk to me about port numbers starting 5xxx.
I don't understand it. And, I certainly can't change it.

Hello,

I get the Disconnected from iChat Agent error message whenever I attempt to log on to my aim account. My iChat was working perfectly fine, up until I decided to add my aim account to another iChat on a different computer. (aka, my computer at work) When I added it to the second mac, I started getting that error message and now I cant log on to iChat with my aim account at all. I know it's a problem with my account, I've been on the phone with apple and we've tried many things. We tried deleting the plists, reinstalling, different port numbers and options, and none of it has worked. I tried logging in with a dummy account that I made on AIM and that worked fine. My .mac account also logs in on iChat.

So, since this seems to be an account problem, has any one else had this problem or have any insight? I can log on to my account on aim express, meebo, and the aim for mac client, just not iChat.

How to make iChat receive google.talk ...

I have set up a google talk account and can login in to via iChat 5.0 on Snow Leopard to that Jabber account. I have placed a google talk applet on my web page for people to chat to me for customer service reasons. But the chat only appears if I have my iGoogle web page open and not in my iChat window, which is what I would prefer.

I have tried to iChat with my Mac friends and PC friends, but it never works, it lets me IM them, but not video or audio chat. Everytime i send an invite, or they send me one, i accept but then a something pops up that says "communication error" and says like the other person hasnt responded when they have? ichat buddy list collapses when ...

Hey, I use ichat to talk to people who use google talk (like apparently a lot of people do). The program runs fine until I check my email on google itself. Basically, when the google chat window loads up in the web browser, the ichat buddy list collapses. What I mean by this is the entire buddy field goes away (as does the bottom bar). I can still receive messages from friends (and return them) when this happens. The problem though, is I cannot initiate a conversation through ichat because I have no means to click on a name (because they're gone).

Once this happens, the problem remains until I logout and log back in to ichat's client. I also have to be off the gmail page for it to work right.

Why is ichat doing this? I've seen a lot of messages about disappearing contacts, but this is not like what I've read about. It's not so much one contact missing from the list as it is just the entire buddy list window collapses to the top bar, and cannot be restored without logout/login.

I use ichat 3.1.9 and OSX 10.4.11

I got a macbook from early 2008. Its totally up to date (got snow leopard). My problem is that when I drag a movie into the iChat theater, it will after a short while (10-30 sec.) take the video from where I last paused it, but the audio will keep on going. I cant fast forward, it will only do so in the audio, not the video. And you cant go back either. I had been waiting a bit, but it doesnt seem like there will come an update fixing this problem, anyone had the problem? what did you do about it?

This piece is designed for those trying to connect Mac to PC for Video and Audio chats. Any iChat version Panther and up.

Glossary For This FAQ

This bit is designed for clarity.

Video is the sending and /or receiving of pictures and sound.
Audio is the sending and or receiving of sound only.
One-Way is the ability to start either an Audio or Video chat from one end to a recipient who can not match your capabilities (or Vice Versa)

What is needed

At the Mac end

A Mac running OS 10.3.x and iChat AV ver 2.1 or 10.4 plus iChat 3 or Leopard and iChat 4
A DSL/Cable/Fibre (Broadband) connection of at least an up link speed of 256kbs.
An AIM , @mac.com or MobileMe (@me.com) account name.
(hosting Multiple person Mac to Mac AV chats requires higher specs and broadband uplink speed).

At the PC end

1 PC running windows XP (home or Pro). THIS A MUST
The AIM Standalone Application, currently at ver. 5.9 at this link. AIM (the Site) now call this version Classic and it cannot be Installed On Vista

Note: there is also Trillian which has a Pro version for $25 that can also Video and Audio chat. The Basic version just Texts and Audio Chats (AIM does not Audio chat)

Some need the aimrtc12.exe file from Here Mostly Earlier than XP or Pre Service Pack 2 XP versions of Windows

An AIM account/screen name (AOL or Netscape count as well)
Service Pack 2 info. This info will allow the PC user to enable AIM thorough the XP Firewall. The Windows Firewall did not exist as such before this.

Between both of you.

At least one camera (Mac end works better)
A sound input device (the camera, if it has one is ok)
Your Buddies screen/account name in each others Buddy Lists

Other tweaks

For some people, using AIM on a PC, may also have to make sure their preferences (properties) are set in the AIM Buddy list, for their camera and /or Mic. (Tuning at Message 570)
This is an icon button lower right on the Buddy List marked "Prefs" (AIM 5.5). This leads to the Preferences. Drop down the list until you read Live Video. Click on this. In the new window that opens click the button that says Tuning Video and Audio. Follow the instructions in the wizard that opens up. Access in AIM 5.9 for this is in the My AIM menu at the top of the Buddy list and then Options

To Start

You should now be able to chat to each other.

If each of you has a camera it can be full Video , as described in the Glossary at the top.
To start from the Mac end, select (highlight) your Buddy with one click. His camera icon should be dark. Click on the icon near his name or the one at the bottom of the Buddy List. (You do not have to start a text chat).
To start from the PC end you need to start a text chat, then select the Video icon at the bottom of the chat window.

If one of you has a camera and the other has a Mic then you will be able to video chat One Way but sound will be both ways.
To start this type of chat from the Mac end you will have to go to the menu item "Buddies" and drop down to the item "Invite to One Way Video Chat"
To start this from a PC follow the directions in the paragraph above. You may need to change the tab to the incoming Video at the back of the two to see the Video. These tabs are added when the Video chat starts and the front one normally states you do not have a camera and shows a connection to buy one.

It is also possible to chat One Way if the other person does not have a Mic: replies will have to be typed in a Text chat.
No Camera and No Mic will cause iChat to End the chat with "No Data Received for 10 Secs"

Summary

PC end gets AIM 5.9 or Trillian Pro.
The PC end allows the app through the XP Firewall.
AIM 5.9 needs "Tuning" to Camera and Mic.

For any sort of sound to a PC using AIM, (Talk in PC or Audio in iChat) the Mac will need a camera. The other person can have a Mic and then live chats with sound both ways and Pictures (Video) One-Way.

list of supported camera's / webcams ...

is there a list of supported cameras or webcams? I cannot find this.
somehow I thought that ichat that goes with osx 10.6 supports almost all camera's?
I have an old logitech camera and I cannot get it to work. Now Ithought of buying some other (pref. cheap) webcam, but before I do that, I want to find out whether or not it is supported

I seem to be getting this an awful lot recently, under a message that "IChat can't communicate with the Mac.com account '(mine)@mac.com'". Even though internet and email is working fine.

Hi, I'm trying to remotely troubleshoot an issue someone is having with iChat and audio/video conferencing. We have users connecting to a Snow Leopard Server (10.6.1) from iChat on 13 identical MacBooks running standard Snow Leopard (10.6.1). We use iChat to connect to the Jabber server over SSL.

One person has been having problems connecting to the server over audio/video. Standard text chats work fine. She doesn't get any error messages, nor does the person at the other end--they both just get a "connecting" message.

The lone variable is that one person uses Comcast Wireless to connect (another person uses Comcast but has a 3rd party wireless router). Just wondering if anyone has any experience with a similar setup, and if so, did you have to do anything to make it work?

counter continues to count ...

The ichat icon on the dash usually bounces and has the number of new messages in a red circle when you have unread messages. Mine did this for a little while, and now it somehow changed to the icon not bouncing when there are unread messages and the coutner just keeps counting every messages, even if they werent missed. i tried to find someithng in preferences but nothing stuck out to me. im sure its something simple but i couldnt seem to figure it out

Hello, I just set up my iChat 4 with an AIM screen name. I'm trying to video chat with my friend on his PC based AIM. iChat sees him and we can text chat, but it does not see his camera. Just today as I logged into ichat I received the message "Host Refuses the Connection, try again later."
Both my AIM and @mac.com accounts will not connect. I can use the wifi at school and log in, but here at home on ethernet it is refusing.
How do I fix this?

mobileme vs dot mac chat id ...

I still use my .mac chat id (as I pay for the mobile me). When .mac changed to .me, those who were paying dot mac people where able to continue using .mac. So, my ichat is my dotmac id. Now, does this mean that, if I want, I still have an available .me id can use as my chat id?? If so, by paying, you are able to get a certificate. My dot mac version has a secure certificate. Does that mean if I create and use my .me chat name, I can get a secure certificate for that one too? Can you have two??

ichat logs on but all buddies appear ...

ichat used to work fine but about a week ago when i would log on it would log on fine but then it says every body is offline. its been doing this for about a week now. the text for every single buddy appears in the light gray font and noone of them have green red or yellow dots next to them. i already tried clicking some of them to see if they just needed to be highlighted but it didnt work. if anybody couls help me id appreciate it because i hate using aim express

iChat crashing repeatedly in Snow ...

I recently discovered that if any of my contacts had set their status with a message containing any Zalgo characters, my iChat would crash/freeze.

So, if you're experiencing crashes like this, have a look at your buddies status' and look for really weird characters that seem to extend above and below their name. Google Zalgo to see what I mean.

Screen Sharing Doesn't Work ...

Hi!

I am having problems getting screen sharing to work. When starting a session I get an error message saying iChat is unable to start screen sharing.

Using the same computer with the same settings I can connect to some systems, but most systems won't allow me to connect.

In all cases, Enable Screen Sharing is checked. All systems are running iChat 4.x. All systems are running the same operating system. All systems are connected via hard-wire Ethernet.

What do I need to do to get iChat screen sharing to work? Connection Doctor does not show any results until AFTER a session has started.

We are able to connect via messaging with no problems.

Setting up iChat ...

Please first let me start by saying please do not tell me to search this subject becasue I can not find all the answers.

I have an Macbook and a Desktop, will have three users on each. Want to set iChat up so I can do video chat with my wife and daughter when I am on travel.

Questions

1. How do I set up iChat for AV? Do I just follow the screens?

2. What is best account besides mobile me to use?

3. What is Bonjour, I noticed that on the Mac Book if I log on with my user ex. John Smith that under iChat and accounts I see a John Smith Account for Bonjour. What is this?

4. Whe I set up the desktop and my other user accounts on the macbook will it automatically setup a Bonjour account?

Chatrooms keep opening upon launch ...

The other day I was in a chatroom with three of my friends, and my router got disconnected, closing iChat. Now, whenever I launch iChat, the empty chatroom from several days ago keeps opening. I do not have this problem with one-on-one conversations with other people (ie, when i close iChat and open it, their chat window does not appear. I am using iChat 4.0.8, if that helps at all.

My friend has a webcam, as we have had video conversations before.
For some reason iChat does not show my friend having a webcam at all. She is on AIM. Is there something I can do to bypass this or to fix it?

Ichat has dissappeared ...

I accidentally somehow managed to delete ichat off my computer today. Here is what happened:

I was practicing using a wacom tablet and unintentionally dragged the ichat icon off the dock and it disappeared. Ok, so I looked for it in applications. When I found it and tried to drag it back to the dock, it accidentally got put into the Ichats folder. So I opened it to drag it back out, and then somehow dropped it and it just vanished.

Now I can't find it anywhere even with a search. I tried to reinstall it through the CD that came with my mac, and it installed Garageband and IPhoto, etc but still can't find Ichat. I did a general install so I assume it should've installed Ichat as well.

Any ideas how I can get it back?

iChat video not connecting ...

I've consistently been having problems using iChat. Most recently I purchased the Airport Extreme in hopes of alleviating any connection problems and it still won't show my friends video. I'm not sure now if the problem is on my end or my friends. Here is the error log I keep getting:

W have a new MacBook pro, ichat version 5.0, and mac os x version 10.6.1

Whenever I video chat i freeze. It never goes choppy then freezes it just freezes. and the other person remains crystal clear and i can still talk and be heard, i just look like a picture.

any ideas on how to fix this?!

Hey there, I have iChat for snow leopard and seem to have problems with seeing the other person when I video chat with them. It's like there are multiple colored squares and my friend's face freezes on half of the video chat screen. How do I fix this? Thanks.

Ok,

So first I wanted to fix the problem of my iChat videochat not working.. So I reinstalled iChat using the OS X disk and selecting iChat.

Once i got iChat back on my computer after trashing it, I opened it and it seemed to work, but then I would click on any buddy and either a box saying "chat" only would pop up, or it will crash completely.

So now I have no video chat and no iChat.

trashing .plists didn't work.

also on the vidchat thing.. i just moved into a school dorm, using a linksys router (WRT54G) we have wireless in our apartment, but we did have to go through a school setup connection.. is there anyway to bypass that? maybe the school has its own firewall that i cant get through to vidchat?

main thing tho.. is getting ichat to work again.

What are the Correct Network Settings ...

I am able to have text chat conversation normally but the audio and video do not work when I am connected to my network. If I switch networks then the audio and video chats do work.

Whenever I try to start a video chat and or audio chat from my network, I get a message that the other person has declined my invitation (and in reality they did not decline).

So it seems that there is something going on with my home network settings but I don't know what exactly is the problem. Can anyone help?

I run Bonjour at work to chat with some colleagues but sometimes I run an AIM window for talking to friends/family not on my work network. Is there a way to make the buddy icon and status message different for the Bonjour account and the AIM account?

Unable to Delete Buddy Group ...

Some months back I was requested to create a chat for myself and a group of friends. Well, it took some time to figure it out, but now I, and for that matter, all the buddies invited, cannot delete this group chat. I try every way I can think of, every way suggested in the user guides, and it pops back up in under two seconds. Every. Time. I use an AIM account on iChat, if that makes a difference.

I've seen similar questions by other people in this forum, but either no one has answered them, or the answers are frustratingly in the back of the search results.

Please, how do I remove this chat once and for all?

Hello, i have this group called "Near Me" and i delete it but it keeps popping back up. I have no buddies in the group so i dont know why it would keep reappearing after i delete. For example, i would delete, 5 seconds later it would reappear. Is there a permanent fix for this?

why is my font on iChat way bigger than ...

I was talking to one of my friends and I thought that my font was set to 10 like it always is but its really at like 14. I don't know how this happened but it looks normal to me on iChat but on any other program (I tested it out on meebo) it's way too big. I tried just setting my font at 10, then 9. But nothing happened.

How do I fix it?

So my friend and I keep trying to video chat but whenever I send the invitation it tells her and I that I'm not responding to the invite when I am. Then when she sends the invitation it tells me that the Remote IP is invalid and it still tells her that I'm not responding. Help?
